Salzburg

Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the main city of the federal state of Salzburg.

Salzburg’s Altstadt – ‘old town’ has internationally renowned for its baroque architecture and one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city is noted for its Alpine setting.

Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and today the place has a lot of brands related to the name of the composer.

In the mid-20th century, the city was the setting for parts of the American musical and film The Sound of Music.

The capital city of the State of Salzburg (Land Salzburg) has three universities. It has a large population of students and tourists willing to discover the place of music.

Salzburg is a tourist favourite place, with a huge number of tourists. In addition to Mozart’s birthplace, other notable places are: Old Town – Altstadt, nominated as a World Heritage Site in 1996, many world famous churches (Salzburg Cathedral, Hohensalzburg Castle, St Peter’s Abbey, Nonnberg Abbey, Getreidegasse).

Outside the Inner Old Town are situated Palace of Mirabell, St. Sebastian’s cemetery, palace of Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn, Anif Castle, Schloss Klessheim, Eagle’s Nest, Berchtesgaden and some ski slops.

Salzburg Airport is a small but modern regional airport. The airport took the name of Salzburg-born composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, an is situated in the eastern part of the city.

The airport is a gateway to ski areas, such as Ski Amadé region.

The distance from Ljubljana to Salzburg is around 280 km and the journey takes around 3 hours.
